From Winning SURF 2025 to Launching on the App Store: Local Life Asia's Journey to Digitize Vietnam's Culture and Authentic Local Experiences

Exactly one year after being crowned the champion of the Da Nang Startup and Innovation Festival, Local Life Asia has officially launched its full platform on the App Store, marking the completion of a journey that unfolded not in meeting rooms, but across ethnic villages, forests, and the winding landscapes of Central Vietnam.

A Milestone at SURF 2025

On July 29–30, 2025, the Da Nang Startup and Innovation Festival (SURF 2025) was held at the National Assembly Guest House (NALOD), 192 Vo Nguyen Giap Street, under the theme "Policy Launchpad – Nurturing Unicorns." Out of 62 registered applications, 31 startup projects advanced to the preliminary round, with the top 10 reaching the finals. The finalists represented a wide range of sectors, including artificial intelligence, information technology, environmental solutions, the circular economy, and advanced manufacturing. The First Prize was awarded to LocalLife.Asia, a Da Nang-based AI-powered sustainable community tourism platform.

The theme of SURF 2025 aptly reflected the challenge that Local Life Asia set out to address. A platform dedicated to digitizing culture and authentic local experiences cannot thrive through technology alone. It requires enabling policies, the active support of local authorities, and the trust of local communities—three critical elements that are often beyond the reach of most early-stage startups. For the Local Life Asia team, the award was never seen as the finish line. Rather, it was a public recognition that the challenge they were tackling was significant enough to bring governments, communities, and innovators together in pursuit of a shared vision.

Digitizing Local Supply: Nearly 300 Hosts and More Than 1,000 Experiences

The most demanding work over the past year has also been the least visible: bringing local tourism offerings into the digital ecosystem. By the time the app officially launched, the platform had onboarded nearly 300 active hosts and more than 1,000 products, including local experiences, accommodations, and tourism services.

Experience from communities across Vietnam has shown that the greatest barrier is not the availability of devices or internet connectivity, but the gap between local knowledge and the language of the marketplace. Many hosts possess deep expertise in traditional crafts, seasonal rhythms, local ecosystems, and cultural practices, yet have never been asked to translate that knowledge into market-ready products—with clearly defined itineraries, pricing, availability, and service standards.

Bridging this gap requires far more than simply uploading information to a digital platform. It demands a sustained, on-the-ground partnership and continuous support. For Local Life Asia, a product is considered truly digitized only when its host begins receiving the first bookings. That moment marks the real test of whether a host will gain the confidence and motivation to remain an active participant in the platform over the long term.

Fieldwork Across Central Vietnam

Alongside expanding its supply network, the founder of Local Life Asia spent much of the past year conducting fieldwork across Central Vietnam and the Central Highlands—traveling with local hosts and working directly with communities and local authorities rather than managing operations from an office.

The journey stretched from Da Nang and Hoi An to Phu Yen, taking in landmarks such as Mui Dien (Dai Lanh Cape), Ong Cop Wooden Bridge, and a series of little-known rocky beaches. It continued to Dak Lak and Lak Lake, then onward to K50 Waterfall and Mang Den, before returning to Da Nang. These field expeditions laid the foundation for the platform's first multi-day travel itinerary, developed through close collaboration between the Local Life Asia operations team and local experts with in-depth knowledge of each destination.

In Dak Lak, collaboration with the M'Nông community led to what the team considers one of its most significant product decisions: developing an ethical elephant tourism model. Under this approach, visitors do not ride elephants, elephants are not kept in chains, and the experience centers on observing them in their natural environment, feeding them, and learning about the centuries-old relationship between elephants and the indigenous mahouts who have cared for them for generations. While this model proved considerably more challenging to market than traditional elephant-riding tours during its early stages, Local Life Asia chose to uphold it as a core principle that the platform is committed to preserving.

A common insight emerged from every field trip: many destinations already possess remarkable tourism products and authentic cultural assets. What they often lack is the digital infrastructure and the resources needed to bring those offerings to market in a professional, scalable, and sustainable way.

Forests, Coastlines, and the Challenge of Sustainable Livelihoods

The more time the team spent in the field, the more they came to realize that the stories of local culture and the natural environment are inseparable. Across many of the communities that Local Life Asia works with—particularly in the Central Highlands and the mountainous regions of Central Vietnam—generations have relied on forests for their livelihoods, and the most valuable indigenous knowledge has emerged from this enduring relationship. When forests decline, communities lose far more than tree cover; they also lose traditional occupations, medicinal knowledge, cultural festivals, and ultimately, reasons for younger generations to remain in their hometowns.

For this reason, Local Life Asia considers nature conservation and the protection of natural forests to be an integral part of its product strategy, rather than simply a sustainability message. The platform's long-term vision is to develop a portfolio of forest-based tourism experiences that preserve forests in their natural state while creating sustainable income opportunities for local communities. These experiences include guided trekking with local experts, discovering indigenous medicinal plants and forest herbs, birdwatching and wildlife observation, small-scale forest-edge accommodations, and agroforestry experiences that build upon the communities' existing livelihoods.

This approach seeks to fundamentally reshape the economic equation for communities living near forests. When an intact forest generates stable, long-term income for local residents, conserving it becomes an economically rational choice rather than one driven solely by administrative regulations. Although this strategy requires years of commitment and does not promise rapid short-term growth, the team believes it is the only way for community-based tourism to avoid the familiar cycle of overexploitation followed by abandonment.

Beyond forest destinations, the platform also prioritizes coastal and river-based experiences rooted in the traditional livelihoods of fishing communities. A guiding principle across all destinations is that visitor numbers must remain within the carrying capacity of each location, ensuring that long-term sustainability always takes precedence over maximizing booking volume.

A Six-Stakeholder Ecosystem

Over the past year, Local Life Asia has built far more than a booking platform. It has developed an integrated ecosystem that connects six key stakeholder groups, with the platform serving as the bridge between them.

At the heart of this ecosystem are local hosts, who preserve their communities' knowledge, livelihoods, and cultural identity. The platform complements their strengths by taking on the functions they often lack the resources to perform—from presenting their stories to international audiences to providing secure payment systems and a consistent flow of visitors.

The platform is designed for travelers seeking meaningful cultural immersion and nature-based experiences rather than conventional mass tourism. This growing segment represents an increasingly significant share of international visitors to Vietnam.

Rather than viewing travel agencies and tour operators as competitors, Local Life Asia sees them as strategic distribution partners. While these companies already possess established customer networks and sales channels, they often lack access to a curated portfolio of verified, fully digitized local experiences. The platform bridges this gap by providing high-quality products that can be readily integrated into their offerings.

Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) and Key Opinion Consumers (KOCs) participate through an affiliate program, enabling influencers and passionate local advocates to promote authentic experiences while receiving transparent revenue sharing for every successful booking they generate.

Another essential component is the Local Knowledge Ambassador (LOK) network—a professionally trained community of local experts with deep knowledge of their destinations. LOKs accompany travelers, ensure on-site service quality, and provide authentic cultural interpretation. This network enables a platform headquartered in Da Nang to operate reliably across destinations located hundreds of kilometers away.

Completing the ecosystem are local governments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Local Life Asia collaborates with Action on Poverty (AOP) and REACH on vocational training, livelihood development, and community empowerment initiatives. At the same time, it works closely with local authorities to bring OCOP (One Commune One Product) products, traditional craft villages, and community-based tourism experiences onto the digital platform, helping local communities expand their reach while preserving their cultural heritage.

Officially Available on the App Store

The insights and experience gained through extensive fieldwork have been fully integrated into the Local Life Asia app, which is now officially available on the App Store with a range of features designed to deliver authentic and personalized travel experiences.

The platform personalizes recommendations based on each traveler's preferences and behavior, allowing every user to discover a different side of Vietnam—whether their interests lie in local cuisine, traditional craft villages, mountain adventures, or river and coastal lifestyles.

The app also enables direct communication between travelers, local hosts, and Local Knowledge Ambassadors (LOKs). Conversations about weather conditions, itineraries, dietary preferences, or cultural customs take place directly between the people who will actually meet, eliminating the need for intermediaries and creating a more authentic connection.

From a user experience perspective, the app embraces a travel social concept, placing immersive photos and videos at the forefront of the interface. Users can browse destinations much like they would scroll through a social media feed and instantly book the experiences that capture their interest. All transactions are processed through secure official payment gateways, with transparent pricing and real-time availability clearly displayed throughout the booking process.

Empowering Culture as an Engine of Sustainable Growth

Local Life Asia's journey unfolds at a time when Vietnam is placing increasing emphasis on harnessing its cultural strengths as a source of endogenous development. As the country positions cultural industries and the digital economy as new drivers of growth, alongside its commitment to green tourism and sustainable development, the platform's mission aligns closely with these national priorities.

From the team's perspective, the true digitization of culture is not simply about preserving artifacts or creating digital museums. It is about enabling the people who safeguard cultural heritage to become active participants in the modern economy—allowing them to earn a sustainable livelihood from their own identity and, in doing so, continue preserving it for future generations.

A community that retains its traditional crafts, native language, surrounding forests, and ancestral ways of life creates a form of long-term value that cannot be replicated through one-time resource extraction. Such living cultural heritage is not only more resilient but also represents one of the most distinctive and difficult-to-replicate competitive advantages in the regional tourism market.

The Road Ahead

One year after SURF 2025, Local Life Asia has entered a new phase of real-world operations, with nearly 300 active hosts, more than 1,000 experiences and tourism products, a growing network of Local Knowledge Ambassadors (LOKs) across Central Vietnam, and an app now officially available on the App Store. The platform's next phase will focus on expanding its supply network while ensuring sustainable demand for hosts, developing a portfolio of forest-based tourism experiences, and strengthening collaboration with local governments to bring more authentic local products and community experiences onto the platform.

Local hosts, tour operators, organizations, and individuals interested in joining the Local Knowledge Ambassador (LOK) program or participating in the affiliate program are invited to connect with Local Life Asia through locallife.asia. The Local Life Asia app is now available for download on the App Store.
